The Turbo Tarot guide

A quick introduction to tarot reading and our deck.

Some info about tarot reading

The Turbo Tarot Deck is a 78-card tarot deck inspired by the traditional tarot system, but with a modern twist. Drawing inspiration from 90s shōjo anime, it brings together expressive watercolor illustrations, soft pastel colors, and a sense of nostalgia that we all long for these days.

Traditional tarot imagery is a bit... dated. With Turbo Tarot, we've reimagined them to reflect our everyday modern life. The meaning of the cards stays the same, though. Every illustration has been updated to tell its own story, making it easier for you to connect with the cards and understand their messages, just by looking at them. Plus, it's fun and nostalgic.

There are 78 cards in the deck

So, like every tarot deck, it's divided into two groups: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana contains 22 cards, while the Minor Arcana contains 56 cards across four suits: Cups, Pentacles, Wands, and Swords.

Each card has its own meaning and offers a different perspective on our experiences. So there are 78 different combinations you can reveal every time you draw a card.

Major Arcana

The Major Arcana depicts the bigger themes in life. These cards often encourage you to look at the bigger picture and consider where we're heading. It could signal a new start (The Fool), the end of a relationship (Death), or to look at life in a different perspective (The Hanged Man). The meaning of each card is also dependent on the context of the reading (right now, we focus on love and work on this site).

Minor Arcana: 56 cards

The Minor Arcana focuses on the nuanced, everyday details. The 56 cards are divided into four suits (categories): Cups, Pentacles, Wands, and Swords, each representing a different aspect of life. Each suit has 14 cards.

A card could suggest a new romantic connection (Ace of Cups), a period of hard work and learning (Eight of Pentacles), or a difficult decision ahead (Two of Swords). Just like the Major Arcana, the meaning of each card depends on the context of the reading, whether it's about love or work. Check them all out below.

Cups

The Suit of Cups focuses on emotions and personal connections. Often, they're all about your emotional availability and how much emotion you should allocate to the different aspects of life: whether it's work, love, friendship, family, or something more specific to you.

They help you to think about how you currently feel, how you connect with other people around you, and how your emotions could influence—or even hinder—how you make decisions.

Pentacles

The Suit of Pentacles is about... how you make your money. It's the practical side of life. We work a lot these days, almost to the point that it's unhealthy. But also, money gives you access to the materialistic things in life, as well as a lot of stability. But what is good and what is not?

Sometimes you should focus on this so-called career. Sometimes, you need a breather. And these cards help you to think about your resources, how they're tied to your energy, and whether you should focus on work and money, or not, at this very moment in life, or in the future.

Wands

Wands cards are about that fiery energy inside you. Your ambition, your creativity, and how you take action based on that.

They help you reassess your motivations, your passion, and how they impact your everyday life.

Swords

The last suit, Swords, focuses on thoughts, communication, decisions, and conflict. These cards encourage us to examine how we think, approach challenges, and deal with difficult situations.

What's the difference between the Major and Minor Arcana?

Think of the Major Arcana as the big picture and the Minor Arcana as the everyday details. The 22 Major Arcana cards explore significant experiences and turning points in life. The 56 Minor Arcana cards focus more on everyday situations, such as relationships, work, personal challenges, and the decisions we make. Together, they offer a way to explore both the larger direction of our lives and the smaller moments that shape them.

How do tarot card meanings work?

There are 78 cards in the deck, and each has a traditional meaning. But that doesn't mean there's only one way to interpret it.

A card's meaning can change depending on the context, e.g., work or love. It's also contextual to where you are in life. Also, the default spread tells you where you are now, where you should be headed, and what you should avoid along the way.

And remember, it's not about predicting the future. It's also about assessing where you are and making a nuanced decision after you've introspectively thought about your life and the topic at hand. A Major Arcana card helps you look at the big picture, Cups cards push you to think about your emotional resources, and Pentacles help you to tie the topic to your work life (and how you make a living).

Why did we create our own tarot deck?

We love tarot IRL. Sitting down with people, taking a breather, drawing the cards, and just having a meditative conversation. And it's something that should be readily available for everyone.

Traditional tarot decks often feature imagery rooted in medieval and historical symbolism. They, of course, carry a lot of history, but they don't necessarily feel so connected to the world we live in today.

We wanted to create a deck that feels more familiar to our millennial upbringing. So you get the 90s shōjo aesthetics. And we plan to create more decks in the future!
