Judgment tarot card explained

Judgment from the Turbo Tarot deck
Judgment

Time for a bit of a life review?

Have you ever looked back at a decision you made five years ago and thought, "Wow, I was a completely different person back then"?

Maybe you were chasing a career that no longer interests you. Or you cared deeply about someone's opinion, and now you really just don't give a damn.

Judgment, card XX (20) in the Major Arcana, is about reflection, accountability, and deciding what to do with what you've learned.

It's not necessarily about being judged by someone else. Think of it more as an opportunity to examine your own choices and recognize how you've changed. We all make mistakes. We also grow, change our priorities, and sometimes discover that the things we once believed aren't quite right for us anymore.

Judgment asks: If you were making that decision today, knowing what you know now, would you choose the same thing? (Loaded question, I know.)

The angel and the people rising below

The traditional Rider-Waite-Smith card shows an angel blowing a trumpet above a group of people rising from their coffins. In the distance are mountains and water.

The imagery is inspired by the biblical Last Judgment, when the dead are called to rise. It's a fairly dramatic way of illustrating a wake-up call.

The trumpet suggests an announcement or realization that can no longer be ignored. The figures rising below represent awakening and the possibility of beginning again with a new understanding.

You don't need to connect with the religious story to find meaning in the card. In everyday life, it can be about finally recognizing something you've been avoiding or making peace with a past decision. Not to erase the past, but to learn from it.

Judgment and your relationships

Perhaps you've noticed that you keep having the same problem in different relationships. Different people, different circumstances, but somehow the same argument keeps coming back.

Judgment might encourage you to look at the pattern instead of focusing only on the most recent disagreement. Maybe you're the problem? Which is a hard pill to swallow, as it also means squashing our ego. It could also be that you had really bad luck—what's important is that you take on the task of reflecting.

Or maybe you're thinking about reconnecting with someone from your past. Before sending that message, it could be worth asking yourself what's actually changed. Are you approaching things differently, or hoping the old problems will somehow disappear? Remember, the card is about reflection.

Card pairing example: Imagine Judgment as what to focus on and the Six of Cups as where you are now. The Six of Cups is associated with nostalgia and familiar connections. Maybe an ex has come back into your life, and you're remembering all the lovely parts of the relationship. Judgment could encourage you to consider what you learned from the experience, including why it ended.

A career wake-up call

Remember what you wanted to be when you were younger? Maybe your answer changed five times before you even finished school.

And yet, once we choose a career, we sometimes behave as though we're not allowed to reconsider it. Judgment can be about taking stock. What have you learned from your work? What would you do differently? And are your current ambitions still your own?

The Fool

Let's say you draw Judgment as where you are now and The Fool as what to focus on. Judgment might reflect a period of looking back and reassessing your choices and what you have done up until that point. And then the beautiful card, The Fool, represents new beginnings and the willingness to try something unfamiliar.

Maybe you've realized that your current career path doesn't make you happy anymore. You don't need to throw everything away, but perhaps it's time to explore something you'd previously dismissed. Or maybe it's something within the job that has to change.

What have you learned about yourself?

There are plenty of ways to reflect on your life. You can talk with a friend, write in a journal, or try looking at a situation through a few tarot cards.

With Turbo Tarot, you can do a free online tarot reading anytime you want. Draw three cards to explore where you are now, what to focus on, and what to avoid, without creating an account.

Maybe Judgment will encourage you to revisit an old decision. Or another card might bring up something you've never considered. Either way, you're the one deciding what it means for you.
