The Temperance tarot card explained

Everything in moderation? Well, sort of

We've all had periods when life feels completely out of balance. One week you're working late every night. The next, you're trying to make up for it by doing absolutely nothing all weekend.

Temperance, card XIV (14) in the Major Arcana, is about just that: balance, patience, and finding a way for different parts of your life to work together. Not really optimizing everything because that would be too much. But, more like, an invitation to have the willingness to adjust.

What's happening in the Temperance illustration?

In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, an angel stands with one foot on land and the other in water, pouring liquid between two cups. The land and water can represent the practical and emotional sides of life. The two cups suggest blending, adjusting, and finding harmony rather than choosing one extreme.

Behind the angel is a path leading toward mountains and a glowing light. There's a sense of movement, but no rush. Nobody is sprinting toward the finish line here. That's the lovely thing about Temperance. It doesn't demand a dramatic transformation overnight. It asks what small adjustment might make things work a little better.

Temperance in relationships

Ever dated someone who operates on a completely different schedule from you? One person's an early bird, the other goes to bed at 2 a.m. One wants every weekend packed with activities; the other would rather stay home. Temperance can be about making space for those differences. Compatibility doesn't have to mean being identical. It can mean finding a rhythm that works for both of you.

If you're single, the card might prompt you to think about the balance between dating and the rest of your life. Are you enjoying meeting people, or has finding a partner become another full-time project?

Five of Wands

Consider Temperance as what to focus on and the Five of Wands as where you are now. The Five of Wands often reflects competing opinions and friction. Maybe you and your partner keep arguing about small things because neither of you wants to compromise. Temperance could propose trying to understand what's actually important to each person, rather than treating every disagreement like a competition.

What about work and ambition?

There are times when pushing hard makes sense. A launch is coming up, there's a deadline, and everyone needs to give a little extra. But if every week is an emergency, something probably needs to change.

Temperance encourages you to look at how you're managing your energy. Are you allowing enough time to recover? Are you trying to do everything yourself instead of sharing responsibilities?

The Chariot

Let's pair Temperance as what to focus on with The Chariot as what to avoid. The Chariot is all about determination and forward movement.

So in this case, stop focusing so much on the boom boom boom, getting to the next step, and just slow down and think about what's important. What's equilibrium in your work life right now?

Temperance also works nicely for people juggling different interests. A steady job and a creative side project don't have to be enemies. The question is how much time and attention you can realistically give each one. Start a new hustle, just like how I started Turbo Tarot!
