The Devil tarot card explained

The Devil isn't quite what you think

Okay, this one looks a little scary. But before you assume you've drawn some terrible omen, let's talk about what The Devil actually represents.

The Devil is card XV (15) of the Major Arcana. It's about temptation, unhealthy attachments, and the habits we struggle to break. Not literal demons, and definitely not proof that something bad is about to happen.

We all have things we know aren't especially good for us. Maybe you keep checking your phone when you're supposed to be working. Maybe you can't stop comparing yourself with other people. Or perhaps you're stuck in a situation because leaving feels harder than staying. What's your vice? What's the Devil in you? 😈

The Devil asks a pretty uncomfortable question: what's keeping you attached, and how much control does it really have over you?

Chains, horns, and an uncomfortable mirror

In the Rider-Waite-Smith illustration, a horned figure sits above a man and woman who are chained to a pedestal. They have small horns and tails of their own, hinting at how they've become caught up in the world around them.

Look closely, though, and their chains appear loose enough to remove. That's one of the card's most interesting details. The image suggests that we may have more freedom than we realize, even when our habits make us feel trapped. Of course, real-life situations can involve serious financial or emotional constraints. Not every chain is easy to take off mentally, even though the solution is just there.

The Devil in a love reading

Strong chemistry can be wonderful. But have you ever been so attracted to someone that you started ignoring things you'd normally consider dealbreakers?

Maybe they're inconsistent, they make you feel insecure, and somehow you're still waiting for their next message. The excitement is real, but is the relationship actually making you happy?

The Devil can point to jealousy, dependence, or patterns that keep repeating. Those are hard to break, especially if you're so used to putting up with them.

Strength

Imagine The Devil as where you are now and Strength as what to focus on. The major arcana Strength is about patience, self-respect, and handling difficult emotions without letting them control you. Together, the cards might encourage you to recognize an unhealthy pattern and find the confidence to set a boundary. A bit cheesy, but really, have the strength to set free. It doesn't have to be dramatic, though, just kickstarting change is enough.

Ambition, money, and The Devil at work

A common theme is money. Being paid well, but being miserable at work. Is the paycheck worth it? Maybe there's an even bigger paycheck out there, you're just not looking.

Or you've reached a senior position and feel you have to keep climbing, even though you don't enjoy the responsibility. The Devil might be asking what your ambition is costing you.

Nine of Pentacles

Here's an example: The Devil appears as what to avoid, while the Nine of Pentacles appears as where you are now. The Nine of Pentacles is associated with independence and enjoying the results of your work. Pentacles cards in general are tied to money (or what you can buy, the materialistic things in life).

Perhaps you've built a comfortable life, but you're so afraid of losing your status that you can no longer enjoy it. The Devil could be a nudge to question whether your goals still serve you, or whether you've started serving them instead. It really also depends on where you are in life and in your career.

What's worth letting go of?

You don't need a terrifying prediction to examine a habit that's not working for you. Sometimes a thoughtful question does the job.

With Turbo Tarot, you can do a free tarot reading online for love or work. Pick your topic, reveal three cards, and explore where you are now, what to focus on, and what to avoid. We don't ask you to create an account.

If The Devil comes up, consider it a chance to be curious about your choices, not frightened by the card.
