The Fool tarot card explained

What does The Fool mean in tarot?
The Fool is the first card in the Major Arcana, numbered 0. It represents new beginnings, taking risks, and stepping into the unknown. Basically, that moment when you're about to start something new, but you have absolutely no idea how it's going to turn out.
Think about the first time you moved to a new city, started a job, or fell in love. There's excitement, but also a lot of uncertainty. You don't know what's going to happen, and that's part of the experience.
That's what The Fool is all about. It's about being open to new experiences and having the courage to take that first step.

Traditionally, The Fool is illustrated as a young traveler standing near the edge of a cliff, carrying a small bag. There's often a dog by their side, and they're looking up at the sky rather than paying attention to what's directly in front of them, about to embark on a new journey.
The small bag symbolizes the experiences and resources they're bringing along. And the cliff? Well, that's the risk of walking into something without knowing what comes next. The dog is often interpreted as a companion or a warning, depending on how you look at it.
In the traditional tarot system, The Fool is numbered 0 because it represents unlimited potential. It's the beginning of what's commonly called The Fool’s Journey, a symbolic journey through all 22 Major Arcana cards. And just like in real life, you don't necessarily know what you're doing when you start. You figure things out along the way.
The Fool in a love reading
The Fool can be a pretty exciting card to draw when it comes to love. It's associated with new experiences, spontaneity, and being open to possibilities.
Maybe you've been single for a while and are finally ready to start dating again. Or you've just met someone who makes you feel like a teenager, and you're wondering whether you should pursue it.
But if you've been in a long-term relationship, maybe you've fallen into a routine, and things are starting to feel a little repetitive. The Fool could be a reminder to try something new together. Go on a spontaneous trip, go on dates more, try something new!
And remember, you're drawing three cards in a reading. So it's interesting to see how The Fool interacts with other cards.

Imagine you draw The Fool as where you are now and The Lovers as what to focus on. Maybe you're starting a new relationship, and The Lovers encourages you to think about whether you share the same values. It's exciting to fall for someone new, but are you actually compatible?

When it comes to work, The Fool is often associated with starting something new. A new job, a new promotion, maybe a new career path.
We tend to get comfortable with what we know. A stable salary is nice, and having a predictable routine can make life easier. But sometimes, staying comfortable also means missing out on opportunities.
Take someone who's been working at the same company for 10 years. They know their colleagues, understand the business, and have a decent salary. But they're also bored out of their mind. Maybe it's a job to retire on, or maybe it's time to look for a new gig.

Now, imagine drawing The Fool as what to focus on and The Emperor as what to avoid. The Fool might encourage you to take a risk and explore something new, while The Emperor could suggest that you're holding on too tightly to structure and stability. Then, they really complement each other in saying, "Take a leap of faith."
It's a beautiful card in reminding us that sometimes, we should dig back into our young, teenage selves, be stupid, and just go for it.
