The Star tarot card explained

A little hope goes a long way

After a really difficult period, there's sometimes a strange moment when things begin to feel possible again. Nothing is magically fixed, you still have problems to deal with, but for the first time in a while, you're looking forward instead of just trying to get through the day (as depressing as that sounds, there's suddenly a spark ✨).

That's the feeling behind The Star. Card XVII (17) of the Major Arcana, it's associated with hope, renewal, and finding a sense of direction after uncertainty.

If you've been disappointed, exhausted, or unsure of yourself, this card might encourage you to notice the things that are slowly getting better. Maybe you've rediscovered an old interest. Maybe you're beginning to trust yourself again. Hope doesn't mean pretending everything is wonderful. Sometimes it simply means believing that things can be different from how they are today.

The quiet symbolism of The Star

In the old school Rider-Waite-Smith deck, it depicts a naked woman kneeling beside a pool of water beneath a large eight-pointed star and seven smaller stars.

She holds two vessels. From one, she pours water into the pool. From the other, she pours water onto the land, where it flows into several small streams. She has one foot near the water and the other resting on the ground.

The scene feels peaceful, especially compared with The Tower, the card that comes immediately before it—that's all about chaotic energy and big changes in life.

Water is often linked to emotions and renewal, while the stars suggest guidance and a sense of possibility. The woman's openness and calm can represent feeling comfortable with yourself, without needing to put on a performance for anyone.

The Star when it comes to love

Maybe you've had a few disappointing dating experiences, or a long history of bad relationships, to the point where you started wondering whether meeting someone compatible is even possible.

The Star might encourage you not to let those experiences define what you believe about future relationships. It's okay to be careful, but you don't have to assume every new person will disappoint you.

In an existing relationship, The Star can be about rebuilding trust or rediscovering the things that brought you together. Not every rough patch can be solved, but some can become easier to work through when both people are willing to try, step by step.

Three of Swords from the Turbo Tarot deck
Three of Swords

Imagine the Three of Swords as where you are now and The Star as what to focus on. The Three of Swords is associated with heartbreak and emotional pain. This would be the perfect combo. You have a breakup, and it feels like shit. But The Star tells you it's time to really focus on starting something new. But not in the "I'm ready to go out and find my soulmate" sense. The Star's energy is more like, "Okay, let me just get through it day by day, and pick myself up slowly again."

There's no deadline for getting over someone. The Star is more about allowing yourself to imagine that happiness could return.

Funnily, if you draw The Star as what to avoid instead, then maybe you should feel all the rage instead of being hopeful. Maybe you need to be scornful for a bit. Therapists say it's good to let your anger out at times.

The Star and finding motivation at work

Let's say you've worked on a project for months, only for it to flop. Maybe hardly anyone used what you launched, or you didn't get the result you were hoping for.

The Star could encourage you to reconnect with why you wanted to do the work in the first place. What still interests you? Dig back to what really inspires you and allow that to remind you of the big picture again, rather than focusing on the short-term goals that we as humans are so ingrained to focus on in modern society.

Ten of Wands

Here's a pairing: The Star as what to focus on and the Ten of Wands as what to avoid. The Ten of Wands often represents carrying too much responsibility. Maybe you've become so overwhelmed by deadlines and obligations that you've forgotten what you actually enjoy about your job. The Star suggests making room for work that gives you energy rather than only taking it away, and letting that energy replenish over time instead of burning out.

That could mean a new project, learning a skill, or simply asking for help with the workload. Really up to your interpretation.

A moment of possibility

You don't have to arrive at a grand revelation every time you draw tarot cards. Sometimes it's enough to feel a little more hopeful or to notice an option you'd overlooked.
