The Tower tarot card explained

When everything goes off-script

I loveee the Tower. It's about change, a big change in your life.

We often want to have things in control in life. That's why you made the plan, checked the details, and convinced yourself you know what's coming next. The Tower changes all of that. Numbered XVI (16) in the Major Arcana, The Tower, represents sudden disruption, uncomfortable revelations, and the collapse of something we thought was stable.

That sounds dramatic, because it is. But it's also not like a disaster. Think of The Tower as a way to reflect on what happens when a plan no longer holds up. Maybe what falls apart was never as solid as you believed. Or maybe circumstances simply changed and you have to figure out what to do next. Either way, rebuilding starts with seeing the situation for what it is.

The lightning strike in The Tower

The Rider-Waite-Smith illustration is hard to miss: lightning strikes a tall tower, flames burst from its windows, a crown flies off the top, and two figures fall toward the ground. Very chaotic energy.

The lightning can represent a sudden realization or event that changes your understanding of something. The falling crown suggests that status, authority, or a sense of certainty can be shaken. And the tower itself represents structures we've built our lives around. There's no gentle way to describe this scene. But notice that the card is about the collapse of a structure, not a verdict on the people living inside it. What's important is knowing that the change doesn't mean you've failed. It just... shifts your direction.

The Tower and your relationships

Imagine discovering that you and your partner have been picturing completely different futures. One wants to do A, the other wants to do B or C. Somehow, after years together, you've never properly discussed it.

That's a Tower kind of moment. The relationship might not be over, but the assumption that you were heading in the same direction has certainly taken a hit.

The Tower can also reflect a sudden breakup or a truth that's difficult to hear. Let's pair The Tower as where you are now with the Ace of Cups as what to focus on. The Ace of Cups is associated with emotional openness and new beginnings.

So maybe you're going through changes now (The Tower), and it's time to consider something new. Maybe it's the end of a relationship, and you feel shitty, but wake up and make room for new relationships to flourish. So in this case, they actually complement each other well—because the new energy can only happen once your tower has been struck.

What if your career plan falls apart?

A company announces a restructuring (there's A LOT of tech layoffs at the time of writing), the project you've spent months building gets canceled. Or a manager you trusted leaves, and suddenly the job feels completely different. Work can change very quickly, even when you've done everything right. When things go well at work, we all just wish for that to stay. For life to enable us with that consistency of just being happy and jolly at work.

The Tower encourages you to examine which parts of your career you've treated as permanent. A job title? A particular employer? The idea that your career will follow one neat path?

But then, suppose The Tower appears as what to avoid and The Emperor as what to focus on. The Emperor represents structure and planning. Together, these cards could suggest that you're relying on an unstable arrangement that's prone to change, and maybe it's time for some stability. And peace.

Forget about what they've taught us millennials. To be on the grind, to have that hustle culture—and always welcome chaos—exactly what The Tower is about. Sometimes, we just want things to stay how they are for a while. And if you get The Tower and it's about what to focus on instead of what to avoid, then flip the mindset and maybe welcome that chaos.

Make sense of the unexpected

Big changes can leave you with more questions than answers. That's not a bad place to start reflecting. Turbo Tarot offers a free online tarot reading for love and work, with three cards to help you explore your current situation, your focus, and what you may want to avoid in just a few clicks.

You might draw The Tower, or something much quieter. Either way, we're not here to predict a crisis. We're here to give you another way to think about what's going on. Start now!
